YPI sponsors the 2020 Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge
One of the most unique events in the world, the 7th edition of the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge took place in Monaco this July, where global teams came together to develop alternative propulsion systems to help accelerate sustainability in yachting.
Organised since 2014 by the Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the event brings together researchers, academics, future engineers, investors and yachting and energy sector professionals as they compete to win one of three prestigious awards. With COVID-19 requiring strict social distancing to remain in place, this year saw the event embrace a fully digital format for the first time in its history.
A new sponsor for 2020, Yachting Partners International were delighted to award the Eco Conception Prize to the winners SBM Offshore E-Racing Team. The award put the spotlight on the efficiency of materials and processes being used in the boat, plus the contribution to science and the candidate’s commitment to sharing good practises.
Abdullah Nahar, YPI’s Director who awarded the prize commented on the day: “We were honoured to be a part of the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge that embraces youth, innovation and sustainability, values that are extremely important to YPI and at the core of our culture. The SBM Offshore E-Racing Team demonstrated an impressive hybrid conception and repurposed and upcycled materials in the design of their project. The event is a brilliant way to witness the inventions and collaboration by the teams that will undoubtedly help us lessen the environmental impact of sailing.”
Two further prizes awarded on the day included The Innovation Price, for the most advanced improvements of visionary and relevant innovations, that promote systems that can be adapted to meet the sector’s requirements. Additionally, the Spirit Prize rewarded participants for originality in how they presented their work in a team video, captured over the previous 12 months.
