Discover the provencal village of Gordes
If you love typical Provence villages, labyrinth narrow cobblestone streets, old houses and quaint little restaurants, you have to visit Gordes. Situated 340m above sea level, Gordes offers a breath-taking view of the famous Luberon mountain. The village, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, is a popular destination of international renown.
Many famous artists have stayed in Gordes, further increasing its popularity and contributing to its fame. These include André Lhote, Marc Chagall, Victor Vasarely and Pol Mara. During the summer Gordes hosts many cultural events from a festival to concerts and numerous exhibitions.
Popular attractions include a 10th century chateau, remodelled during the Renaissance that overshadows the village, the cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace and the beautiful Saint-Firmin church. Art is represeneted throughout the village with a number of exhibitions and museum dedicated to Pol Mara, a contemporary Felmish painter who lives in the village. The Abbey of Senanque is also popular for its Romanesque art and inhabiting Cistercian monks.
A nice itinerary is to visit Gordes in the morning, enjoy lunch with a breath-taking view and then travel to Avignon for shopping and further sightseeing. You can spend the evening in Avignon and depart the next day.
Gordes is 30 minutes from Avignon, 45 minutes from Marseille Airport and two hours from Nice and the Riviera.
